Soap Opera Awards 2000 Update

Friday, March 10, 2000

There are only three reasons I own a television set.
1. Soap operas
2. Award shows
3. Beauty pageants
Combine more than one of those genres and I am in heaven!

The Soap Opera Awards for 2000 were broadcast on Friday, March 10th on NBC television. These awards are put together by Soap Opera Digest Magazine (my personal favorite of the soap rags.) The nominees in each category are selected by the editors of the magazine and voted on by the readers. Anytime the fans vote for awards, there are clear patterns that develop. About five years ago, almost 90% of the categories were won by actors from Days of Our Lives. This obviously proved that most of the voting readers of the magazine were DOOL fans. That fact led to the current method of nominating actors for the awards. But tonight, every time an actor from and ABC soap (All My Children, One Life to Live, General Hospital and Port Charles) was nominated, that actor won. I guess the fan base of Soap Opera Digest is somewhat fickle and has switched their allegiance from one program to an entire network.

The Bold and the Beautiful received three nominations this year:

Adrienne Frantz (Amber) - Outstanding Younger Leading Actress

Marissa Tate (Becky) - Favorite Female New-comer

Susan Flannery (Stephanie) - Outstanding Leading Actress

None of our B&B favorites won an actual award, but they are winners in my eyes, man. I'm guessing the fans of B&B are too sophisticated to read such a rag as Soap Opera Digest or such busy professionals they don't have the time to submit a ballot. (Yeah, that's the ticket.)

For your viewing pleasure, dear readers, I have collected several moments from the awards program celebrating our Bold and Beautiful favorites.

Adrienne Frantz as her name was announced as a nominee for Outstanding Younger Leading Actress. She was robbed. Kelly Rippa (Hayley on All My Children) received the award. In her acceptance speech she thanked the editors for thinking her good enough and young enough to be nominated. Good point, Kelly.

This is Miss Frantz's scene shown to the audience to display her acting prowess. I realize it's a little fuzzy. It was the scene in Tawny's trailer where Amber screamed at Sarah, the midwife, to save her baby. It appeared to move Miss Kelly Ripa to tears.

Ashly Lyn Cafagna (Kimberly), Justin Torkilsdon (Rick) and Adrienne Frantz (Amber) presented an award. I can't seem to remember what it was. I guess I really didn't care since a B&B star was not nominated.

Darlene Conley (Sally) was shown in a clip from the 1993 Soap Opera Awards with Italian model Fabio.

Back to the present, Miss Conley gave a presentation about Soap Opera Digest (SOD) cover photographs over the past 25 years. She noted she had not been featured on a cover, but was always good between the covers. (Ooh, she's so bad.)

Justin Torkilsdon (Rick) took some good-natured ribbing from Darlene Conley (Sally) about his SOD cover after being the businss for only "15 minutes."

Marissa Tate (Becky) as her name was announced as a nominee for Favorite Female New-comer. The award went to Abigal Spencer who plays Becca on All My Children. Marissa, baby, you were robbed!

This was the video moment to accompany Miss Tate's nomination. She was screaming for Amber to take Little Eric back after she had taken him upon discovering he was her own child. Such drama!

Susan Buxton (Morgan) shown applauding after viewing a tribute to the cancelled soap opera, Sunset Beach. Miss Buxton portrayed Annie on that program.

Susan Flannery (Stephanie) smiling for the camera as her nomination for Outstanding Leading Actress was announced. The award went to Kim Zimmer - Reva on The Guilding Light. I suppose it's hard to compete with an actress that went from being an Amish woman to a clone to finally remembering that she had been a princess and given birth before wandering into that Amish village. Puh-leeze!

The scene where Stephanie confronted Brooke at the Big Bear cabin was shown to prove what a fabulous actress Miss Flannery truly is. She deserved to win.
