The Talented Mr. Ripley
Date viewed: December 25, 1999
Location: 42nd Street E Walk, Manhattan

I read Entertainment Weekly cover to cover each week. I see lots of movies (although I have been remiss about reviewing many of them through the fall) and therefore see every movie trailer out there. That often makes if difficult for me to review films because I always assume my readers know as much advance information about movies as I do. Obviously this is not always the case. A friend sent me an email telling me she had only heard of one of the movies on my web page and had not even seen that one. I will therefore assume not everyone knows the plot of Ripley from its extensive pre-release press.

Matt Damon (yummy) plays Tom Ripley. He's a nobody in New York City that stumbles into the chance to bring a shipping magnate's son back home from Italy. The son, Dickie (Jude Law, double yummy), is a ne'er -do-well playboy living the high life with his girlfriend, Marge (Gwyneth Paltrow). Tom discovers Dickie's life is pretty swell and just hangs out with him instead of dragging him home. I think Tom may be a little sweet on Dickie. (Pardon the pun. I couldn't resist.)

As rich boys are prone to do, Dickie tires of his new playmate, and Tom isn't too happy about it. Dire consequences ensue.

The movie is creepy and suspenseful in a Hitchcock sort of way. The scariness is offset by the beautiful Italian landscapes. Gwyneth sure doesn't have much to do but Cate Blanchett (love her) knocks your socks off in the pivotal (but unfortunately tiny) role of an American debutante.

Listen to me:

a.) Matt Damon in a tiny, chartreuse swim suit.
b.) Jude Law emerging from a bath tub.
c.) Matt Damon emerging from a bath tub.
d.) All of the above.
